Rare Russian Orthodox August Menaion Icon, Finely Painted and Gilded

Russia, 19th Century

A finely painted and richly gilded Russian Orthodox Menaion icon for the month of August, depicting the saints and feast days traditionally commemorated throughout the month. Executed in the traditional Russian iconographic manner, the composition is arranged in several horizontal registers, each presenting groups of saints, martyrs, holy figures, and important liturgical scenes associated with the August calendar.

Menaion icons form an important part of Orthodox devotional art. Rather than depicting a single saint or biblical episode, they bring together the principal commemorations of an entire month, allowing the faithful to honour the saints and feasts of the liturgical calendar in a single image. August is particularly rich in important celebrations, including the Transfiguration of Christ and the Dormition of the Mother of God.

The present icon is distinguished by its very fine quality of painting, with numerous carefully rendered figures, expressive faces, detailed garments, and extensive gilding. The warm golden ground and vivid reds, greens, and blues create a particularly rich and luminous appearance.

The elaborate ornamental border further enhances the icon’s decorative and devotional character. Its compact dimensions make it suitable both for a private collection of Russian icons and for display as a distinctive work of Orthodox religious art.

A beautiful and finely executed example of Russian Orthodox icon painting, combining extensive iconographic content with exceptional decorative richness.
