A fine pair of large-scale oil-on-canvas history paintings depicting New Testament scenes of Christ among the scribes and scholars.
In the first composition, Christ stands centrally in a flowing red cloak, one hand raised in teaching or blessing, surrounded by a densely grouped assembly of turbaned and robed figures—Pharisees and doctors of the law—within a classical architectural interior of columns and steps. Several figures lean in attentively or gesture in discussion; a young boy and other onlookers occupy the lower right.
The companion painting shows Christ again in the red mantle, gesturing toward a kneeling woman while a crowd of scribes and elders, some holding scrolls, gathers around him in a vaulted hall. The dramatic lighting, carefully observed costumes and expressive faces reveal a high level of academic skill.
Both works date to the late 18th century (circa 1800) and display the refined, theatrical handling typical of European history painting of the period.
Condition
Both canvases are in need of restoration (surface dirt, craquelure and areas of wear consistent with age).
