An exceptional and highly decorative pair of monumental Venetian corner cabinets, dating to the late 18th century, circa 1770. Richly carved and polychromed, these architectural pieces exemplify the exuberant Rococo taste associated with Venetian decorative arts of the period.
The cabinets are distinguished by their boldly shaped, architectural forms with serpentine sides, elaborately carved feet, scrolling rocaille ornament, and finely modelled decorative details. The warm gilt ground is enhanced by delicate hand-painted floral decoration, including roses and other flowers, creating a particularly charming interplay between the sculptural carving and painted ornament.
The upper sections are crowned by richly moulded architectural cornices. The original 18th-century marble tops are preserved, believed to be executed in Seravezza marble, further enhancing the quality and historical importance of the pair.
Designed to fit elegantly into architectural corners, such cabinets were both highly decorative and practical furnishings, particularly suited to aristocratic interiors, palazzi, and grand European residences. Their monumental proportions and exceptionally elaborate carving give them a striking presence even when viewed as sculptural objects.
The survival of a matching pair, retaining their original 18th-century character, makes these cabinets particularly desirable for collectors of Venetian furniture and European Rococo decorative arts.
