An exceptional and highly decorative pair of Italian wall-mounted jardinières, dating to circa 1800 and distinguished by their elaborate carved and painted decoration.
The jardinières are conceived as richly ornamented architectural wall baskets, with a beautifully pierced woven-lattice rim above a sculptural body decorated with scrolling foliage, acanthus leaves and shell motifs. The surfaces are finished in a sophisticated combination of white and gilded decoration, creating a striking contrast between the pale ground and the luminous carved details.
The central feature of each jardinière is a pair of exquisitely carved birds facing one another, their wings spread and their bodies rendered with remarkable attention to the plumage and movement. They are framed by a large shell-shaped reserve and surrounded by elaborate scrolling foliage and foliate ornament. A smaller carved shell and further scrolling decoration complete the lower section.
The elaborate combination of ornamental carving, gilding, figural birds and pierced basketwork gives the pair a particularly theatrical and luxurious character. Designed to be seen as a pair, they would have provided an imposing decorative accent in an elegant interior, while also serving as ornamental containers for flowers or plants.
Both jardinières include metal planters that ensure the possibility of proper planting and upkeep.
