A finely painted Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God, one of the most venerated Marian icons in the Russian Orthodox tradition. Dating to around 1900, this beautifully executed example follows the traditional iconography of the celebrated Tikhvin Mother of God.
The Tikhvin Icon belongs to the Hodegetria (“She Who Shows the Way”) type, in which the Virgin Mary presents the Christ Child while directing the viewer’s attention towards Him. According to Orthodox tradition, the original icon was associated with the Evangelist Saint Luke and was miraculously transported to the region of Tikhvin in northern Russia in the 14th century. The icon subsequently became one of Russia’s most important and revered sacred images, particularly associated with the Tikhvin Dormition Monastery.
This later icon faithfully follows the traditional composition, with the Virgin depicted frontally holding the Christ Child, who raises His hand in blessing. The restrained yet expressive faces, carefully rendered garments, and rich red, gold, and ochre tones reflect the enduring visual language of Russian Orthodox icon painting.
The icon retains its aged surface and historic character, with the visible signs of time contributing to its authentic antique appearance.
