An impressive and monumental pair of Chinese Foo Lions, finely hand-carved in wood and richly decorated in red and gilt polychrome. Dating from the first half of the 20th century, these imposing guardian figures display a remarkable combination of sculptural strength, intricate carving, and vibrant traditional decoration.
The two lions are portrayed in characteristic seated poses upon elaborate stepped architectural bases. Their expressive faces feature open mouths, pronounced brows, curled manes, and finely carved ornamental details. The bodies are richly embellished with decorative pendants and scrolling motifs, while the original red and gilt finish creates a particularly striking visual effect.
The pair follows the traditional iconography of Chinese guardian lions, historically placed at the entrances of palaces, temples, residences, and other important buildings as protective figures. The composition of the pair also reflects the traditional distinction between the two guardians: one is accompanied by a ball beneath its paw, while the other is shown with a smaller lion figure, symbolizing the complementary masculine and feminine principles.
Particularly noteworthy are the monumental proportions of the figures and their elaborate carved bases, which significantly enhance their architectural presence. Their scale makes them ideally suited to grand entrances, halls, gardens, terraces, or sophisticated interiors where they can serve as dramatic sculptural focal points.
