A monumental and finely carved wooden sculpture depicting Saint James the Greater (Santiago de Compostela), created in Italy around 1680. Executed during the Baroque period, this exceptional work displays the expressive character, refined craftsmanship, and rich polychromy that distinguish the finest Italian ecclesiastical sculpture of the late 17th century.
Expertly hand-carved in wood, the figure retains its original polychrome decoration with partial gilding, beautifully highlighting the saint’s flowing robes and dignified presence. Saint James is portrayed with a serene expression and commanding stance, reflecting both his importance as one of Christ’s Apostles and his enduring role as the patron saint of pilgrims.
